Prophet Ibrahim

إبراهيم

Mentioned in over 69 verses across the Quran

Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) holds one of the most honoured places in all of Islamic tradition. He is known as Khalilullah — the Friend of Allah — and he is celebrated as the patriarch of the Abrahamic faiths, the builder of the Ka'bah, and a model of complete faith and submission to Allah.

Ibrahim grew up in ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) in a society steeped in idol worship. From a very young age, he used the gift of reason that Allah had given him to question the idols his community bowed to. Stars, the moon, the sun — he observed them all setting and disappearing, and he concluded: these cannot be God. Only Allah, the one who created all of these things, is worthy of worship.

His faith brought him into direct conflict with his people and their king, Nimrod. When Ibrahim was thrown into a great blazing fire by those who rejected him, Allah commanded the fire: "Be cool and safe for Ibrahim" (Quran 21:69). Ibrahim walked out unharmed. Not even fire could harm the Friend of Allah.

Ibrahim was tested again and again throughout his life, and he passed every test. He was commanded to take his wife Hajar and infant son Ismail to a barren, uninhabited valley — what would one day become Makkah — and leave them there with only basic provisions. He obeyed. When Hajar ran desperately between the hills of Safa and Marwa searching for water, Allah caused the spring of Zamzam to burst forth from the ground — a spring that still flows today.

The greatest test came when Ibrahim received a command in a dream to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail. With the extraordinary courage and faith that defined his life, Ibrahim prepared to obey. But Allah, pleased with the depth of their submission, replaced Ismail with a ram — and this act of obedience is commemorated by Muslims every year during Eid al-Adha.

Ibrahim and his son Ismail later built the Ka'bah together — the sacred house of worship at the heart of Makkah — and prayed for Allah to accept it and raise from their descendants a prophet who would guide all of humanity. That prayer was answered, generations later, in the person of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The life of Prophet Ibrahim teaches children that true faith sometimes means standing alone, that Allah rewards those who obey Him even when it is difficult, and that the one who places their complete trust in Allah will never truly be alone.
